Can Wet Drywall Be Saved?

Sometimes wet drywall can be saved. Often it can't. Here's how professionals decide.

Technician assessing water-damaged drywall in a Baltimore home

'Can we just dry it out?' is one of the most common questions we hear on water damage jobs. For drywall, the answer depends on three things: how long it was wet, what kind of water, and whether it was saturated.

When Drywall Can Usually Be Saved

  • Clean water (Category 1) from a supply line or appliance
  • Only damp, not saturated
  • Exposure was less than 48 hours
  • No visible sagging or softening

In these cases, professional drying with air movers and dehumidifiers often returns drywall to normal. We monitor moisture daily until it reads within safe range.

When Drywall Has to Be Replaced

  • Category 2 (gray) or Category 3 (black) water
  • Saturated to the point of softening or crumbling
  • Wet more than 48 hours with no professional drying
  • Visible mold growth on the face or behind
  • Paper facing is stained through or delaminating

Flood Cuts

When only the lower portion of drywall is wet, we often make a 'flood cut' — removing the bottom 12 to 24 inches so the wall cavity can dry and the top portion stays in place. This saves time and materials.

What About Insulation?

Wet fiberglass or cellulose insulation usually has to be removed. It holds moisture and can compromise the wall assembly's performance. Closed-cell spray foam is different and can sometimes stay.
