How to Protect Your Baltimore Home Before a Major Storm

A few hours of preparation before a storm can prevent thousands in water damage. Here's a Baltimore homeowner's storm-prep checklist.

Baltimore home being prepared ahead of a major storm to prevent water damage

Baltimore sees its share of severe weather — nor'easters, summer thunderstorms, and the remnants of tropical systems that dump heavy rain on the metro area. Storms are one of the leading causes of the water damage we respond to. The good news is that a few hours of preparation before the weather hits can prevent most of it.

Before Storm Season

  • Clean gutters and downspouts so water drains away from the foundation instead of overflowing.
  • Extend downspouts to carry water several feet from the house.
  • Test your sump pump and add a battery backup — storms cause both the water and the power outages.
  • Check your roof for loose or missing shingles and have them repaired.
  • Seal foundation and basement wall cracks where water can seep in.
  • Regrade soil that slopes toward the house so it slopes away.

When a Storm Is in the Forecast

  1. Clear the yard of furniture, tools, and debris that could become projectiles or block drains.
  2. Move valuables, electronics, and important documents off the basement floor and onto higher shelves.
  3. Confirm your sump pump runs and its discharge line is clear.
  4. Charge phones and backup batteries in case the power goes out.
  5. Know where your main water and power shut-offs are.

After the Storm

If water gets in, act fast. Document the damage with photos and video, stay clear of standing water near electrical hazards, and start extraction and drying as soon as possible — mold can begin within 24 to 48 hours. The quicker the response, the less water wicks into subfloors, drywall, and wall cavities.
